Athens County Proclaims November Adoption Month
By Robin WebbOctober 28, 2016
ATHENS, OH - October 28, 2016 – In the state of Ohio more than 3,200 children are in the foster care system and available for adoption. More than thirty of them live right here in Athens County. November is National Adoption Month and by unanimous vote the Athens County Commissioners have proclaimed November as Adoption month in Athens as well.
Athens County Children Services is bringing attention to this important issue to highlight the need for permanent families in Athens County and beyond, and to provide information to those interested in learning more about parenting opportunities. “In addition to calling attention to our ongoing need for permanent, safe and loving homes for our county’s most vulnerable children, we also use this month to celebrate the adoptions that have taken place this year, and honor those families who have stepped up to give our children the homes that they deserve,” said Brittany Dodd, Adoption Supervisor at ACCS.
ACCS will be hosting a National Adoption Day reception on November 18th, where they will finalize the adoption of 5 children that day, as well as celebrate the 8 adoptions that have already finalized in 2016. “We have lot to celebrate this year,” said Dodd, “because of families in our community opening their hearts and their homes, 13 children in Athens County will no longer wait in the foster care system for a permanent home to call their own.”
“The need for adoptive families is urgent,” said Tanja Kuhre, Recruiter and Trainer for ACCS. “When children age out of the foster care system without being adopted, they enter the world without the support of a permanent family that many of us take for granted.”
ACCS is available to answer any questions you might have about the adoption process. “If you are considering adoption, ACCS will be with you throughout the entire process, providing support, training, and other services even after the adoption has been finalized,” Kuhre added.
